They chased fashion thinking they would get a hit - a mistake. This continual delusion they have boxes them in along with the ever-changing band member saga. For this album, nothing stands out as being exceptionally memorable, such as their earlier work.
I don't hum these songs while going for a walk. Counterparts such as U2 and Depeche Mode made a great living of just being who they are by only deviating here and there. On retrospect, they have wised up to this and the next two records are worthy of the earlier Duran name.
Hopefully, for the next record, they will continue in that vein. No-one really wants a hip-hop Duran record -- they want a Duran Duran record. How did your bass playing and your approach to music in general change as that production changed? I think that when we started out, everybody had very clearly delineated parts: I took care of my corner, he took care of his corner, you know. But in the mid 80s, the band kind of — a couple of the guys left for a period of time, and there was three of us doing the work of five.
I come in with an idea for a guitar part, and everybody else does the same. Everything he played was interesting, and he carved out this space for himself that really, for me, took me back to version 1. That was because we had confidence in what he was doing.
