She wins a bundle of money and the promise of a successful career. The losers, who drop off each week, get supportive parting words from RuPaul, a chance to write their good-byes in lipstick on vanity mirrors, and, likely, a good deal more followers on Twitter and Facebook.

Classic reality talent show goodness. Such parallels are, perhaps, why The Hunger Games trilogy is truly a product of its time—the age of reality television. Principally, the books are futuristic fantasy novels featuring a refreshing female heroine, and incorporating tried-and-true tropes of successful fiction—Twilight-esque love triangle, Stephen King-level suspense and forward motion of plot, Margaret Atwood-caliber political undercurrent, release of books forming a classic sci-fi trinity a la Lord of the Rings , Star Wars , Back to the Future , etc.

Apparently the movie version of Battle Royal is extremely violent, and the reasoning behind the forced battle is not just totalitarianism but population control. I had a lot of trouble diving into the second book right from the first.

The first book ended with so much action focused on the games, that the Victory Tour, meeting of people, fashion statements, etc. Spoilers most likely will be present. Reading the third book before reading the second book actually allowed me to reference a lot of what happens in the third book to what seems to be trivial detail in the second book. Definitely a series worth reading if anyone out there is still left contemplating.
